Irèni's curiosity for the healing arts began with her training in the Topf Technique 1996, an embodied practice based on somatic movement research, Dynamic Anatomy and an in-depth study of the skeleton psoas muscle. A transformative experiential practice bringing awareness to our core and somatic inquiry. From hands-on bodywork to release technique and dance improvisation to vision movement quests by the ocean and performances in Nature, this was a life-changing experience that helped Irèni with her spinal difficulties and sparked a passion for learning more the body's innate wisdom for healing. Nancy Topf was a mentor and friend; Irèni participated in intensive summer workshops where dancers, choreographers, and holistic practitioners gathered to learn the Topf Techniques in Rockport, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Nancy tragically died in the Swiss Air flight 111 from New York that crashed at Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, in Sept 1998 on her way to teach in Geneva. Since this tragic loss, students from around the world who studied with Nancy continue her legacy. In Irèni's work, she has integrated the Topf technique in her Artistic and Choreographic Practice, SomaThai Bodywork Practice, in all her yoga, dance and movement classes, and teaching workshops on the Topf Technique.
Irèni discovered the unplugged world of remote Costa Rica in the year 2000 in an Artist in Residency project at Estudio Los Almendros, and in mentorship with Dr. Ninoska Gomez. For 18 years, she lived in deep resonance and awe of the life force present in the blue zone healing environment of Costa Rica. Scientific, spiritual, and sacred, a journey of personal growth and professional development ensued. Irèni deepened her study of yoga and bodywork with advanced certifications. She developed a Healing Arts Practice in the jungles and ocean landscapes of rural Costa Rica and expanded to San Jose and Nicaragua's performing arts community. In direct communion with her knowledge, research and the earth, she founded SomaThai Yoga Bodywork, Bamboo Yoga, River Yoga, FullMoonRise Yoga, Soma Dance, and Movement Retreats directly in Nature, as well as creating dance choreographies Mia Zoi, Flores de Pochote, The Geography of my Heart, Bodysories. A journey of in-depth integration brought back and continues in Canada.
"Irèni, you are truly a creative force and our last dance "bones" I don't think I will ever forget...there was such a high level of exploration, such courage, such adventure...the work, so strong."
Nancy Topf, New York
" Irèni is kind, present, and compassionate. She beautifully integrates the physical with the spiritual, truly embodying what people talk about when they talk about the mind-body connection. She's so much more than a bodyworker or yoga instructor. She's a healer. Katie, Washington, DC"
"you were already such a highly attuned, gifted healer and teacher; you came in as a master".
